Our take
What does Ambre smell like?
Molinard is one of the old houses of Grasse. Its Ambre eau de parfum dates from 2015, and some retailers present it as a reworking of an older amber from the house. The opening is unexpected for an amber. Lavender, bergamot, orange and lemon make it fresh. For a few minutes it smells close to a classic cologne. The heart quickly turns warm. Benzoin and incense give a sweet, smoky resin while clove and geranium add a spicy edge. Vanilla, patchouli and musk form a rounded, classic amber at the base. The lavender drifting back now and then recalls Guerlain's Jicky, in a simpler and softer register. It lacks some depth, though, and that is our main reservation. The amber stays well behaved and never reaches the animal side of the great orientals. For the price, it delivers.
When to wear it
An easy winter amber that works at the office and at night. Two sprays on the back of the neck and a wool collar to hold it.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber family. Ambre is one of 8 creations by Molinard in our encyclopedia.
