Our take
What does Azzaro pour Homme Elixir smell like?
Azzaro released Azzaro pour Homme Elixir in 2009 (some retailers say 2010). It's an oriental reworking of the 1978 Azzaro pour Homme, the anise-tinged fougère that became a bathroom-shelf classic. No perfumer has been publicly confirmed. The opening is fruity and fizzy. Bergamot and lemon lead, followed by pear and blackcurrant that add an unexpected sweetness. Lavender and geranium then form a very readable fougère heart, true to the house. The base is where it changes. Coumarin, oakmoss and labdanum keep the classic frame. Vanilla and benzoin add a sugary warmth the original never had. The result is a rounder, almost ambery fougère that smells more like a wool sweater than aftershave. Compared with the original Azzaro pour Homme, Elixir trades the anise and herbs for softness. Fans of the 1978 classic may find it too tame, while newcomers will find it easier to wear.
