Our take
What does Patchouli smell like?
Reminiscence has made its Patchouli since the early 1970s, and no perfumer is credited. Patchouli hits first, dark and earthy, smelling of roots and cellars. Cedar dries it out. Sandalwood and vetiver then take over and the scent rounds out. The base is where it all happens. Vanilla, tonka and labdanum coat the patchouli in amber sweetness, and tolu balsam adds a resinous note with a hint of cinnamon. The result is softer and more edible than raw patchouli, without the sugar rush of Angel. The formula has changed over the years, notably with a different sandalwood. Today it is sold as Le Patchouli Eau de Toilette Intense. It is a hippie-era classic that has aged better than its reputation suggests. Staying power is still remarkable.
When to wear it
