Our take
What does Serpent Bohème smell like?
The name comes from a Boucheron jewellery line. Anne Flipo composed the perfume in 2020 as a musky floral chypre. It opens tart. Mandarin brightens blackcurrant, whose slightly sulphurous bud note adds some relief. The heart rests on Turkish rose, supported by jasmine sambac and a mallow note that gives a dried-petal feel. This is a skin rose rather than a garden rose. The base recalls modern chypres. Cistus brings an ambery, slightly leathery warmth, patchouli adds earth and sandalwood adds softness. White musk wraps it all up and keeps the patchouli from turning dusty. The dry-down is the best part, a soft resinous rose that lingers on a scarf for days. Compared with Chloé, another well-known rose of recent years, Serpent Bohème is darker and less soapy. It still stays discreet, without the heaviness of older chypres.
When to wear it
