Our take
What does Mr. Burberry smell like?
Mr. Burberry arrived in April 2016, two years after My Burberry, as its masculine counterpart. Francis Kurkdjian composed both. The opening smells of freshly squeezed citrus. Grapefruit leads, cardamom adds a cool bite and tarragon brings the slightly aniseed green note that gives the scent its identity. The heart slides into wood with birch leaf, dry nutmeg and cedar. The base stays in the same register. Quiet sandalwood sits with vetiver and guaiac wood, which adds a faint smokiness. Nothing sweet and nothing heavy. The tarragon is what you notice first, and it stays readable for longer than you'd expect. It smells like a clean shirt and a tweed coat. The grapefruit and vetiver pairing recalls Terre d'Hermès, though Mr. Burberry is softer and far less mineral. Longevity is decent for an eau de toilette and gets through an office day.
When to wear it
A daytime woody for the office, in spring or autumn. Three sprays in the morning carry it to the evening.
It belongs to the Woody, Aromatic family. Mr. Burberry is one of 20 creations by Burberry in our encyclopedia.
