Our take
What does Déclaration d'un Soir smell like?
Cartier released Déclaration d’un Soir in 2012. Mathilde Laurent, the house perfumer, offered a night-time version of the 1998 Déclaration by Jean-Claude Ellena. The opening is openly spicy. Black pepper, cardamom and cumin give a warm and slightly animal note. A flash of citrus lets in some air. Cumin is the dividing line. It can smell like skin or like a kitchen. The heart reveals a dry rose lifted by nutmeg. There is nothing romantic about it and it stays in the shadow of the spices. The base is creamy sandalwood backed by woody notes that cling to clothes for hours. The whole thing suggests a shirt worn all day, clean but lived in. The original Déclaration is greener and more bitter with its wormwood. The Soir version is rounder and more sensual. It has less originality and more warmth.
When to wear it
A spicy woody for autumn and winter evenings. Two sprays are enough because the cumin quickly takes over.
It belongs to the Floral, Woody, Musky family. Déclaration d'un Soir is one of 15 creations by Cartier in our encyclopedia.
