Our take
What does Explorer Ultra Blue smell like?
Montblanc expanded the Explorer line in 2021 with Ultra Blue. Three Givaudan perfumers made it: Jordi Fernández, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux. The brand talks about blue skies, sea and icy mountains. Italian bergamot and pink pepper open it. Nothing new, but it is crisp. A marine accord quickly takes center stage. A slightly salty ambergris note backs it up. The base keeps the Explorer DNA of patchouli, woods and a fairly dry leathery facet. That base is what rescues it from blandness. Next to the 2019 Explorer, Ultra Blue trades some of its leathery woods for salt water. It joins the large family of masculine blues, somewhere between Acqua di Giò and Bleu de Chanel. It shares their strengths and their lack of surprise. Nobody will dislike it, and few will remember it.
When to wear it
A daytime scent for spring and summer, from the office to a café terrace. Three sprays on chest and neck are plenty.
It belongs to the Woody, Aquatic family. Explorer Ultra Blue is one of 19 creations by Montblanc in our encyclopedia.
