Our take
What does Eau de Campagne smell like?
Sisley was founded in 1976 and Eau de Campagne came out the same year. Jean-Claude Ellena composed it, long before his Hermès years. Its central idea comes down to one material: tomato leaf, which was rare in perfumery at the time. The opening mixes basil and galbanum with bergamot and lemon. Think of a vegetable garden just after watering. In the heart, tomato leaf moves forward with peppery geranium and a little jasmine. Lily of the valley and plum stay in the background. The base is more classical. It has the old-school bitterness of the seventies. Oakmoss and patchouli give it a chypre frame, vetiver adds earth and white musk smooths it. Compared with Chanel N°19, another famous green from the same decade, Eau de Campagne is less powdery and far more vegetal.
When to wear it
Ideal for a day outdoors, though it also works in town. The freshness is herbal rather than lemony, so it suits people who dislike sweet colognes.
It belongs to the Floral, Green family. Eau de Campagne is one of 9 creations by Sisley in our encyclopedia.
