Our take
What does Eau d'Ikar smell like?
Sisley launched Eau d'Ikar in 2011 as a masculine eau de toilette built on woods and herbs. The opening is classic but careful. Bergamot, lemon and bitter orange give a clean zest. Galbanum adds a sharp green note while carrot seed brings an earthy touch close to iris. The heart rests on lentisk, the Mediterranean resin that smells like sun-warmed scrubland. Orange pekoe tea and reed make it dry and vegetal. Iris and jasmine stay in the background. Cistus, sandalwood and vetiver form the base. It is resinous without weight, with a dryness that recalls driftwood. Next to Terre d'Hermès, another mineral woody from the 2000s, Eau d'Ikar feels more herbal and less orange. It has a very French restraint that suits anyone tired of sweet men's scents. The drydown is the best part and lasts longer than the citrus.
When to wear it
