The story of Narciso Rodriguez

Born in New Jersey to parents of Cuban origin, Narciso Rodriguez trained at Parsons School of Design and worked for major houses before launching his own line in 1997. He came to wide public attention after designing Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's wedding dress in 1996, a model of minimalism. His fragrances, developed with the Shiseido group, translate that same restraint. For Her, launched in 2003 and composed by Christine Nagel and Francis Kurkdjian, placed musk at the very heart of the composition, a rare choice at the time. Its success gave rise to a whole family of variations. In 2014 Narciso opened a new line in a white cube-shaped bottle, built around a powdery musk and a brighter rose. Both lines remain central to the brand and have made its name synonymous with elegant skin scents.

An olfactory signature

Musk is the thread running through Narciso Rodriguez, treated like a second skin. For Her pairs rose, peach and bergamot with a heart of musk, amber and orange blossom, then a base of patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver: a sensual musk, slightly fruity and woody. Narciso, whiter and more powdery, sets rose and gardenia over a central musk with a base of cedar and vetiver. Restraint, softness and staying power define both, along with a very particular intimacy.

Which Narciso Rodriguez perfume to choose?

If you want a sensual, warm musk, For Her is the house's historic reference, with its touch of peach and woody base. For a more powdery, bright and clean musk, Narciso is better suited to everyday wear and the office. Both are discreet yet long-lasting, ideal for anyone who wants an elegant skin scent rather than a showy trail.

Frequently asked questions

What is Narciso Rodriguez's most famous fragrance?

For Her, launched in 2003, is Narciso Rodriguez's best-known fragrance. Built around a musk heart paired with rose, peach and amber, it popularised modern musky scents. Narciso, released in 2014 in its white cube-shaped bottle, is the house's other major line and a strong seller in its own right.

What is the difference between For Her and Narciso?

For Her is a sensual musk, slightly fruity thanks to peach, with a base of patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver. Narciso is more powdery and luminous: rose and gardenia over a central musk with a cedar and vetiver base. The first is warmer, the second cleaner and more pared-back.

Why is musk so central at Narciso Rodriguez?

The designer made musk the signature of his perfumery from For Her in 2003. Rather than confining it to the base, as is often the case, the compositions place it at the heart of the fragrance. The result is a second-skin effect, sensual and minimal, in keeping with his fashion.
