What does Hazelnut smell like?
Hazelnut smells of praline, chocolate spread and freshly roasted nuts. Depending on the dose it leans buttery or toasted. It is less sugary than caramel and drier than vanilla. Used well, it gives a perfume body without turning it into dessert. Overdosed, it gets cloying fast. On skin it lasts well and stays close.
Origin and production
The common hazel (Corylus avellana) grows all over Europe. Turkey now supplies the largest share of the world's hazelnuts, well ahead of Italy. The nut gives no essence usable in perfume. The note is built from synthetic molecules: pyrazines for the roasted side and filbertone, the ketone behind the typical hazelnut smell.
How perfumers use it
Hazelnut gets along with cocoa, coffee, iris and tonka bean. It anchors gourmands without adding more sugar. Valentino Uomo (2014) places it in the heart near chocolate and leather. Mugler Angel Muse (2016) runs a hazelnut praline over vetiver, which dries it out. Jimmy Choo Fever (2018) keeps it in the base. Amouage Guidance (2023) opens with it in a more floral composition.
How to wear it
Hazelnut suits October to March. Two sprays are enough, on a roll-neck rather than bare skin. In summer heat it turns sugary fast.
