Our take
What does Scandal by Night smell like?
Jean Paul Gaultier spun off Scandal in 2018 with this nighttime version, sold as an intense eau de parfum. It is credited to Daphné Bugey, though some listings also name the team behind the original Scandal. Honey opens with no preamble. It is thick and almost waxy, lifted by bitter orange and some citrus that fades quickly. Then the colour changes. Tuberose takes over, creamy and a little rubbery, flanked by candied cherry and sugary pear. Orange blossom adds a sunny glow. A touch of spikenard, mentioned by some sources, brings a welcome earthy shadow. The base is dense. Tonka and vanilla blend with patchouli, while sandalwood and amberwood add a dry wood that lasts through the night. Compared with Scandal, By Night puts tuberose at the centre and pushes the sugar even further.
When to wear it
Strictly for nights out in autumn and winter. One or two sprays, any more and it takes over the room.
It belongs to the Floral, Oriental / Amber family. Scandal by Night is one of 22 creations by Jean Paul Gaultier in our encyclopedia.
