1880s

Modern perfumery was born with Guerlain's Jicky (1889), the first perfume to use synthetic materials (coumarin and vanillin). This decade marks the beginning of synthetic perfumery.

1900s

1910s

The 1910s saw the emergence of great oriental and chypre classics. Guerlain's Mitsouko (1919) and Caron's Tabac Blond (1919) laid the foundations for olfactory families that would last throughout the 20th century.

1920s

The revolutionary decade of perfumery. Chanel N°5 (1921) invented the aldehydic floral and became the world's most famous perfume. Guerlain's Shalimar (1925) and Lanvin's Arpège (1927) defined the golden age of French perfumery.

1930s

The 1930s saw the peak of classic haute perfumery. Jean Patou's Joy (1930) was considered the most expensive perfume ever created at the time, using astronomical quantities of rose and jasmine.

1940s

Despite the war, French perfumery continued to innovate. Miss Dior (1947) accompanied Christian Dior's New Look and marked the rebirth of post-war elegance. Nina Ricci's L'Air du Temps (1948) with its iconic dove bottle became a symbol of peace.

1950s

The 1950s marked the expansion of luxury perfumery. Estée Lauder's Youth Dew (1953) revolutionized the American market. Chanel's Pour Monsieur (1955) established refined masculine elegance.

1960s

The decade of fresh modernity. Dior's Eau Sauvage (1966), created by Edmond Roudnitska, invented modern hesperidic freshness and influenced all masculine perfumery to come. Guerlain's Habit Rouge (1965) mixed orient and fougère.

1970s

The 1970s saw the emergence of powerful and assertive perfumes. Chanel N°19 (1971) established green chypre, Yves Saint Laurent's Opium (1977) caused scandal with its name and oriental sensuality. Clinique's Aromatics Elixir (1971) and Ralph Lauren's Polo (1978) defined new standards.

1980s

The decade of 'power dressing' and powerful perfumes. Dior's Poison (1985), Calvin Klein's Obsession (1985), and Chanel's Coco (1984) embodied the boldness of the 80s. Dior's Fahrenheit (1988) and Davidoff's Cool Water (1988) revolutionized masculine perfumery.

1990s

The 1990s marked the arrival of aquatic and gourmand perfumes. Thierry Mugler's Angel (1992) created the gourmand family. Issey Miyake's L'Eau d'Issey (1992) and Calvin Klein's CK One (1994) established unisex freshness. Armani's Acqua di Gio (1996) became a worldwide blockbuster.

2000s

The decade of global best-sellers and the rise of niche. Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle (2001), Dior's J'adore (1999), Paco Rabanne's 1 Million (2008) dominated the market. Meanwhile, Tom Ford (Black Orchid 2006), Le Labo and Byredo emerged as new niche references.

2010s

The 2010s consecrated Dior's Sauvage (2015), which became the world's best-selling men's fragrance. Lancôme's La Vie Est Belle (2012) and Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540 (2015) became viral phenomena. Niche perfumery exploded with Le Labo, Byredo, MFK.

2020s

The 2020s mark the maturity of niche perfumery and the influence of social media. Armani's My Way (2020) and Paco Rabanne's Phantom (2021) integrate Gen Z codes (inclusivity, sustainability, digitalization).
